Canada organizes symposium on best practices in migration and recruitment

As part of the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between Canada and the Philippines, the Embassy of Canada, in partnership with Miriam College, is organizing a symposium on best practices in migration and recruitment on Wednesday, February 18, 2009 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Environmental Studies Institute, Miriam College Campus, Katipunan Avenue, Quezon City.
Entitled "Sustaining Mutual Gains: Best Practices in Migration and Recruitment,” the symposium will bring together a diverse group of stakeholders to discuss three broad themes with regards to migration and recruitment. We are planning to invite representatives from the International Labour Organization, the Government of the Philippines, the International Organization for Migration, local embassy officials, academics and a wide range of participants from local NGOs and agencies working in the field of migration.
The first theme to be discussed will be the “non-collection of recruitment/placement fees.” This discussion will focus on how government policy can be put into practice to ensure that employees are not required to pay in order to obtain employment. The second theme will be “the spirit of giving back” – how employers can give back to a community from which they recruit workers. The third theme of the day will be on cultural integration programs, and how best to prepare overseas workers for the relocation to a new country. Under each theme we are inviting two guest speakers to address the issue. This will be followed by an open forum where participants will be able to provide comments or reactions on the subject matter.
